Oris Big Crown Pro Pilot GMT

Oris are a firm favourite within the watch community, known to produce well-made watches, with automatic Swiss movements, at a very competitive price point.

The brand started producing watches in 1904 and in 1938 created the Big Crown, for use by glove-wearing pilots.

This 2019 watch Big Crown Pro Pilot GMT takes inspiration from those early watches, with updates that make it suitable for today’s pilots.

The black dial is highly legible with bold white numerals and lume-filled hands. A small date window at 3 o’clock sits opposite a running seconds subdial. But perhaps one of the most useful complications for today’s travellers is the GMT function, shown by a yellow-tipped GMT hand which points to a 24-hour ring around the outside of the dial, framed by a coin-edge bezel.
 
 
At 45mm this isn’t a small watch, but its short lugs and relatively slim profile make it easy to wear. Through an exhibition case back, you can view the Swiss-made Sellita SW220-1 movement, decorated with Oris’ signature red automatic rotor.
 
The watch is paired with a black canvas strap with an Oris seatbelt buckle, but would look equally as good on any number of straps, including leather or rubber.
