MIH Annual Calendar Chronograph
It’s not very often that you come across an MIH watch, let alone have the opportunity to purchase one. It’s also possible that you’ve not heard of the MIH watch, so please allow me to explain…
MIH stands for the Musée International d’Horlogerie, a horological museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland. The museum’s curator, Ludwig Oechslin, was tasked to raise funds to restore a complicated clock on display at the museum and came up with the idea of creating a watch with the proceeds of the sale going back to the museum.
Ludwig, himself a watchmaker and designer and creator of the Ulysse Nardin Freak, assembled a team including expert watchmaker Paul Gerber and industrial designer Christian Gafner. The task was to create a watch that was to be simple and affordable, yet somehow incredibly complicated.
Housed in a 42mm titanium case, the watch uses an ETA 7750 as a base movement – a well-known automatic chronograph. But where is the chronograph, you ask? The mono-pusher at 2 o’clock acts as a start, stop and reset for the red centre seconds hand, and a minute counter is visible through a window in the case back.
But perhaps the most impressive feature is the annual calendar, displayed by a simple day, month and date, and containing only nine components. And if that wasn’t enough, two small red dots display an AM/PM indicator.
This really is an impressive amount of horological engineering for a watch that originally retailed at just CHF 6,000.
Despite the fact that the watches were sold between 2005 and 2020, it’s estimated no more than 1,500 were ever made – it’s quite possible that this model will become a museum piece itself.
We are extremely excited to be able to offer this special watch for sale. Supplied in an excellent pre-owned condition with its original strap and packaging.
