Moritz Grossmann Atum Enamel Rose Gold
Limited to just 25 pieces worldwide, this special watch is both rare and exceptional.
The story of Moritz Grossmann begins in 1854 when, after travelling around Europe, the watchmaker returned to Glashütte, Germany, to set up his atelier. Grossmann continued to produce timepieces and develop new watchmaking techniques until he passed away in 1885.
Over 100 years later, the brand was brought back to life by Christine Hutter, a keen German watchmaker. Today’s pieces give a modern take on that beautiful, historical craftsmanship.
In 2010, Hutter released her first watch under the new era of Moritz Grossmann – the Benu. This 2018 Atum Enamel in Rose Gold has the DNA of a dress watch, but is elevated both in size and stature.
At 41mm, it’s by no means a small watch, but with its slim bezel, it allows the wearer to fully appreciate the beauty of its Grand-feu white enamel dial. A delicate railroad-style minute track surrounds elongated Roman numerals, 11 of which are black with the XII highlighted in blue. Moritz Grossmann’s signature slender lance hands not only allow for accurate reading of the time, but are heat-treated to a violet-brown colour. The process used to achieve this colour is very technical as the violet-brown comes between the original steel colour, and the more familiar blue colour.
Furthermore, the wearer is also able to set the time with precise accuracy, due to Moritz Grossmann’s unique setting function. As with a normal watch, pulling out the crown will stop the operation, but the crown then springs back to its original position. You can accurately set the time by turning the crown, but then re-activate the watch by pressing the button at 4 o’clock. This avoids the jolt (and ultimately moving the hands) that you can get when pushing the crown back in.
In contrast to the simple dial, the movement has another level of intricate beauty. The in-house Calibre 100.1 features a three-quarter bridge, decorated with Glashütte ribbing, a ratchet wheel with two bands of snailing, and hand-engraved text. The balance cock has also been hand-graved with an elaborate floral design. There are many other details and technical features, too many to list here, but which can be found on the Moritz Grossmann website.
Back to the watch itself, the polished case is paired with a Moritz Grossman black alligator strap. However, we can offer a number of alternative MG straps – please get in touch to find out more.
