Rolex Day-Date 36mm "Pleiades"
It’s not often a watch stops me in my tracks. At a glance, there’s no mistaking this as a striking diamond-set yellow gold Rolex. But in the hand, under a loupe, and on the wrist, it begins to tell a far more compelling story.
This 1979 Rolex reference 18048 combines the unmistakable presence of the Day-Date with one of the most unusual and seldom-seen dial configurations ever produced by the brand.
The “Pleiades” dial takes its name from Greek mythology, where the seven daughters of Atlas were transformed into stars for protection. That inspiration is reflected here, with diamonds scattered across the dial in a star-like formation, creating a highly distinctive and almost celestial appearance. These dials were never part of Rolex’s standard catalogue, instead offered discreetly to select clients as a special-order option during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Manufactured by Beyeler from an 18ct yellow gold base, the dial features diamond hour markers alongside additional brilliant-cut stones, each set by hand directly into the dial plate. The Rolex signature and “Day-Date” text are presented on applied cartouches at 12 and 6 o’clock. Under a loupe, you can really appreciate the craftsmanship that has gone into this piece.
The dial is housed within the iconic 36mm 18ct yellow gold Day-Date case, a size that wears well on most wrists. This particular reference, 18048, denotes a factory-set diamond bezel, here featuring 44 diamonds framing the dial. The watch is fitted to an 18ct yellow gold President bracelet, with crisp clasp engravings showing the code 8385, correct for the period.
Powering the watch is the automatic Rolex calibre 3055, a movement long regarded for its reliability. The watch has been checked and authenticated by a Rolex-certified watchmaker, is running well, and is supplied with a six-month warranty for peace of mind.
Presented in excellent vintage condition, the watch shows only light signs of wear to the case, with clear engravings on the back of the case. The bracelet also shows very little signs of wear.
Rarely seen and highly individual, the Pleiades dial elevates the Day-Date into something altogether more distinctive, almost romantic. It speaks of Rolex’s craftsmanship, and with its outstanding vintage condition, would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
